The problem

Hospitals, SACCOs, schools, and NGOs across Uganda needed to reach hundreds or thousands of contacts with time-sensitive information — appointment reminders, loan repayment nudges, fee collection notices. Manual calling was slow, expensive, and couldn't scale. SMS had low reach. WhatsApp excluded the majority without smartphones. The gap: no affordable, language-appropriate voice communication infrastructure built for African market constraints.

The solution

Built Jukila — a full-stack automated voice campaign platform. Organisations upload audio in any local language (or generate it with AI voice in Luganda, Runyankore, Acholi, Swahili, and English), import contacts via CSV, and set a call schedule. Jukila handles the rest: placing thousands of outbound calls, retrying misses at +1hr, +3hrs, then next day, and stopping the retry chain the moment a call is answered. Credits are only charged per answered call. Organisations top up via MTN or Airtel Mobile Money — no bank account required. A live dashboard shows delivery status, answered vs. missed, and cost updated every few seconds.

My role

Lead developer and product architect. Designed and built the full platform from scratch: multi-tenant architecture, campaign scheduler (running every minute, adjusted for East Africa Time), voice call infrastructure, AI voice generation pipeline, contact normalisation to E.164 format, intelligent retry queue, real-time dashboard, Mobile Money billing integration (MTN and Airtel), PDF campaign reports, and CSV export. Responsible for system design, backend APIs, infrastructure, and deployment.

Outcome

Live platform trusted by 200+ organisations across Uganda — hospitals, SACCOs, schools, NGOs, and government agencies. 76% average answer rate across all campaigns. A microfinance institution cut cost per reminder from UGX 1,200 to UGX 50 and raised on-time repayment from 64% to 81%. A community health clinic cut its no-show rate from 35% to 9% and freed 12 hours of staff time per week. An NGO reached 4,000 rural beneficiaries in a single two-hour campaign — in Luganda — with less than 24 hours notice.
